Jonah Goldberg on UN Weapons Inspections:

"Imagine your kid has been playing with matches. You confront him. He puts his hands behind his back. You say, Let me see what's in your hands. He says no. You insist. He shows you one hand. You say, Let me see the other. He returns the first behind his back and shows you the other one. You demand to see the other hand. He says no. He plays the same game for a while. Then he hides the matches in his pants. And so on. According to the great minds of Old Europe, a smart and sophisticated father would keep playing this game indefinitely, while a boorish (i.e., an American) father would say, 'Listen, kid. If you don't stop this B.S. — and right now — it'll take UNMOVIC a year just to find my boot in your ass.' "

From Popular Mechanics' front page:

Robot Tunnel Rats In Afghanistan

"Transferring technology from the lab to the battlefield, American forces have added robots to the hunt for terrorists. Four robots--nicknamed Hermes, Professor, Thing and Fester--earned their stripes last summer by helping the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division search cave and tunnel complexes surrounding Qiqay, Afghanistan. The 42-pound tread-driven warriors are adaptations of PackBot, a sort of robot scout developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Initially, the 3-ft.-long x 1-ft.-tall robots were envisioned for reconnaissance duty in war-torn cities. Their video cameras and ability to navigate narrow passages and avoid obstructions make them the perfect tunnel rats. Hermes and his buddies are operated using a remote-control unit that is worn like a flak jacket. Pleased with the little robots' performance on recon missions, the Army plans to give each one a 12-gauge shotgun or a grenade launcher. In World War I, tanks ended the stalemate of trench warfare. PackBots might have a similar effect by defeating armies that hide in caves."

The double standards this country holds make me sick. Yesterday, a federal judge threw out a lawsuit against McDonald’s that claimed the fast-food company was responsible for the obesity problem many American kids have. The judge tossed the lawsuit on the basis that “plaintiffs failed to show that customers were unaware that eating too much McDonald's food would be unhealthy.” Um, forgive me for being slow, but how come this hasn’t stopped people from suing companies that manufacture, market, and sell tobacco products? Surgeon General’s Warnings have been on tobacco products for almost 40 years now, so how can you claim people have no idea what smoking does to them?

The McDonald’s suit was ridiculous, and it’s good some people recognize it as such. Smoking, however, has become so demonized that most people don’t stop to think about responsibility. Many would rather take away smoking altogether than to let people make that decision on their own. If you are one of those people that thinks smoking should be illegal, you need to put some more thought into it. Outlawing something without a Biblical reason for doing so is wrong, and just because you may not like what is being outlawed doesn’t make it a sin. Smoking is not a sin, and neither is fast-food.

My roommate and I had an assignment due in a 9 o'clock class this morning. Started the assignment at around 8:40, finished it around 8:57, and ran across campus to class JUST in time to hear our teacher call my name for roll. This, for whatever reason, reminds me of a quote I read in a recent Credenda Agenda that goes something like "the sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up."

I have very little homework, and my only class is at 5:30 tonight, so maybe I'll go do something before then. Like get a new hard drive, or go to the beach. Tomorrow will be good too. I've got class all day, but tomorrow night we're gonna go see Kansas and Styx at the Pensacola Civic Center. And Avril Lavigne just came on MTV. Things just don't get any better :)

I am a drifter. I go where life leads, which makes me usually a very calm and content sort of person. That or thoroughly apathetic. Usually I keep on doing whatever I'm doing, and it takes something special to make me change my mind.

Wendy's has got to be the cheapest fast-food restaurant around. You can get a quarter-pound double-stack w/everything for $.99 ($1 less than the single quarter-pounder), add a bag of tortilla chips (no charge....they normally come with the taco salad, but they'll give 'em to you free) and if you drink water, your total comes to about $1.07.

Twothirtyeight is playing Pensacola next month on the 14th. I am so stoked...their last show here was incredible. For those underprivileged few who have never heard of twothirtyeight, they're a Christian emo band originally from the Fort Walton Beach area — now signed with some label in Seattle — who just rock. If you get a chance to check their stuff out, don't pass it up.
